Description: This map is an illustration of Canada’s river current or hydrokinetic energy resource potential. Presently, river current technologies are envisaged for Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories, Ontario and Quebec. River current or hydrokinetic facilities use the flow of the river to produce electricity. Unlike traditional hydropower which uses a reservoir hydro or diversion structure, river current approaches use generators installed directly in rivers. They require no diversions, have no storage, and use minimal infrastructure.
